RESUMO

This study investigates the presence of Trichuris trichiura eggs in soil samples collected from urban areas in Lahore, Pakistan. A total of 3600 soil samples were collected over two years from Lahore's urban regions. The detection of helminth eggs in these samples was performed using sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as a diagnostic technique. The study reveals an overall prevalence rate of T. trichiura at 0.97 % (35 out of 3600) in the contaminated soil samples from Lahore's slum areas. When analyzing the data by geographical areas, the study found the highest prevalence of T. trichiura in Allama Iqbal Town (1.83 %, 11 out of 600), followed by Samanabad (1.16 %, 7 out of 600), Wapda Town (1.00 %, 6 out of 600), Gulberg (1.00 %, 6 out of 600), and Cantt (0.50 %, 3 out of 600). Conversely, Valencia Town had the lowest prevalence rate at 0.33 % (2 out of 600). However, these variations in prevalence rates were not statistically significant (p = 0.117). Prevalence rates of T. trichiura's eggs varied significantly across different sampling seasons (p>0.001). In autumn, a total of 900 soil samples were collected, with 19 samples (2.11 %) testing positive for T. trichiura. This rate was notably higher compared to the prevalence rates observed in winter, spring, and summer, which were 0.66 %, 0.22 %, and 0.88 %, respectively. Regarding the sampling months, the study observed a significantly higher prevalence during September (3.33 %, 10 out of 300), followed by October (2.33 %, 7 out of 300), and August (1.33 %, 4 out of 300). Prevalence rates gradually decreased in other months, ranging from 1 % to 0.33 % (3 to 1 out of 300), with no parasite detection in March (0 %, 0 out of 300) (p < 0.001). This research underscores soil contamination due to fecal waste and highlights public unawareness of parasite biology, driven by open defecation practices.

Background: Telemedicine became a fundamental part of healthcare provision during COVID-19 pandemic. An evaluation of telemedicine-associated satisfaction helps the service develop more viable applications. This review evaluated the satisfaction of healthcare users and providers and their willingness to use this modality in future.Methods: The study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. A search on empirical articles published between March 2020 and December 2022 was performed on 'PubMed' and 'Scopus' databases. Findings that reported on satisfaction of patients, families and caregivers as well as clinicians were extracted and analysed. Quality of included studies was assessed. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, the review included 27 eligible studies.Results: Data was found from a variety of emergency and non-emergency departments of primary, secondary, and specialised healthcare. Almost all studies were undertaken within the NHS. There were many tools that measured satisfaction. Satisfaction was high among recipients of healthcare, scoring 9-10 on a scale of 0-10 or ranging from 73.3% to 100%. Convenience was rated high in every specialty examined. Satisfaction of clinicians was high throughout the specialities despite connection failure and concerns about confidentiality of information. Nonetheless, studies reported perception of increased barriers to accessing care and inequalities for vulnerable patients especially in older people. In general, willingness to use telemedicine in future was high in the recipients as well as the providers of healthcare.Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic has transformed healthcare in the UK and promoted a revolution in telemedicine applications. Satisfaction was high among both recipient and provider of healthcare. Telemedicine managed to provide a continued care throughout the pandemic while maintaining social distance. The current review presented commendable evidence to encourage different specialities to engage in telemedicine application.

The camel is an important mammal, especially in the Middle EAST, although it has received less attention than other mammals and ruminants. Due to the lack of studies in this field, the current research was designed to investigate the morphological, histological, and immunohistochemical of one-humped camel's stomach. In this study, the third chamber (abomasum) of the stomach in adult one-humped camels (Camelus dromedaries) were evaluated (n=12). The morphological study of the third chamber showed that it consisted of two parts, the letter J, where the front part was found to be tubular, the outer surface is smooth, swollen, and transparent, while the inner surface has longitudinal folds with a low height. The posterior part is spherical, and the inner surface is divided into two regions. Histological study showed that the abomasum consists of four layers and is lined with simple columnar epithelium. The lamina property is composed of loose connective tissue. It contains different glands that, according to their location from the abomasum, where cardiac, Fundus, and pyloric glands are found, as well as stomach cells such as neck cells, mucous cells, chief cells, and parietal cells. In contrast, the sub mucosa layer is composed of loose connective tissue. It was also observed that the muscular layer is developed and contained from two layers, a circular inner and the outer one is longitudinal. It was also noted that the fourth layer is composed of loose connective tissue. The histochemical study showed a positive response to the PAS reagent.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) have a considerable risk to public health in the world, due to its high ability to develop resistance to different classes of antibiotics. It has been discovered as a prevalent coinfection pathogen that causes sickness exacerbation in COVID-19 patients. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of P. aeruginosa from COVID-19 patients in Al Diwaniyah province, Iraq and to identify its genetic resistance pattern. 70 clinical samples were obtained from severe cases of patients (RT-PCR positive for SARS-COV-2 on a nasopharyngeal swab) who attended Al Diwaniyah Academic Hospital. 50 P. aeruginosa bacterial isolates were detected via microscopic examination, routine cultured and biochemical testing, then validated by the VITEK-2 compact system. VITEK reported 30 positive results, which later confirmed through molecular detection using 16s RNA specific for detection and a phylogenetic tree.20 isolates had positive PCR findings and 5 isolates submitted to GenBank with accession numbers OL314557.1, OL314556.1, OL314555.1, OL314554.1, OL314553.1.For antibiotic resistance genes, the number of the isolates containing blaOXA-1 and blaCTX-M 18 (90 percent) and 16 (80 percent) respectively. To study its adaptation in a SARS-CoV-2 infected environment, genomic sequencing investigations were undertaken with phenotypic validation. In conclusion, we demonstrate that multidrug resistant P. aeruginosa play an important role in in vivo colonization in COVID-19 patients and could be one of the causes of death of these patients which indicates the great challenge to clinicians in the facing of this serious disease.

OBJECTIVE: To review articles reporting on the development of soluble biomarkers in osteoarthritis (OA) over the past year. DESIGN: Two literature searches were conducted using the PubMed database for articles published between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. Two searches were done, one on soluble biomarkers and another on circulating non-coding RNAs in OA. Additional articles were hand-picked to highlight emerging biomarker trends in OA. RESULTS: Of 348 publications retrieved, we included 20 articles with 3 that were hand-picked for the narrative synthesis. We review recent data on soluble biomarkers and circulating non-coding microRNAs in OA using the BIPED classification system. We highlight studies using proteomics to show that cartilage acidic protein 1 (CRTAC1) is a promising biomarker, helping diagnose and estimate severity in hand, hip, and knee OA. Subtle changes in the structure of glycosaminoglycans from the extracellular cartilage matrix were shown to discriminate OA from non-OA cartilage. C-reactive protein metabolite (CRPM) and collagen metabolites may help discriminate subsets of OA patients as well as disease progression. Additionally, physical activity may impact determination of biomarkers. We also report on circulating microRNAs, lncRNAs, and circRNAs in OA and their predictive accuracy in diagnosis and prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Biomarkers for routine use are still an unmet need in the OA clinical scenario. Emerging data and novel classes of biomarkers (i.e., non-coding RNAs) show promise. Although still requiring validation in multiple independent cohorts, the past year brought advances towards a ready-to-use, reproducible, cost-effective biomarker, namely CRTAC1, to better manage the OA patient.

Size-specific dose estimate (SSDE), which can be calculated by measuring the effective diameter (De) or water equivalent diameter (Dw) of the patient, is one of the recent approaches for verifying the individual doses during computer tomography (CT) examinations. This work aimed to compare the Dw estimated by the AutoWED tool and IndoseCT software and to investigate CT axial (ARH) and paediatric head (PH) protocols used in southern Saudi Arabia to calculate the dose received by paediatric patients using metrics of volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and SSDE. The distribution between the ARH and PH protocols was 57.8 and 42.2%, respectively. There was no significant difference in Dw values between the AutoWED tool and the IndoseCT program (0.13%). Including CT table or other objects during estimation of Dw can lead to variation up to 11.4%. The impact of selecting IndoseCT options to identify the border of the patient may be part of the explanation for these variations. A strong linear relationship was obtained between De and Dw in paediatric head size (R2 = 0.96). Using IndoseCT, for 0-1.5, 1.5-5 and 5.0-18 age groups (years), the Dw was found to be 13.2, 15.3 and 16.8 cm, respectively. The SSDE for the PH protocol was substantially lower than that of the ARH protocol. As a result, education of the individuals engaging in paediatric CT examinations is necessary for dose optimization.

Platycladus orientalis L. Franco has many folk uses as it is mainly used to treat inflammatory ailments. UPLC-MS/MS was used for the chemical profiling of P. orientalis leaves. Identified metabolites were forwarded to network pharmacology analysis. Networks were constructed based on STITCH, SEA, DAVID, KEGG and STRING databases and using Cytoscape. The identified hit compounds were afzelin, myricetin, apigenin-7-O-hexoside, quercetrin and hyperoside. IL2, VEGFA, AKT1, AKT2, CREB1, IL5, RPS6KB1 and TNF were the main inflammation-related targets identified. Quercetrin and hyperoside were tested for their anti-inflammatory activity. it can be concluded that, the identified hit compounds exhibited strong synergistic interactions with the inflammation and immunity-related targets and pathways.

SGLT-2 inhibitors have gained importance in recent years because of their cardio-protective and reno-protective properties in diabetes. SGLT-2 inhibitors, when introduced in diabetic patients, may cause euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis. A 55-year-old woman presented with low-grade fever, vomiting, and lethargy. She was started on dapagliflozin two years back. On workup, she was diagnosed with euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (EDKA) and was managed accordingly. She improved clinically while her dapagliflozin was stopped. With a literature search, we have identified 15 case reports of EDKA with dapagliflozin since 2015. There are no standard guidelines regarding the monitoring of patients for this rare but potentially morbid complication. Moreover, the exact mechanism for this is unknown. Various precipitating factors are linked with SGLT-2 inhibitors in promoting EDKA. We recommend that customary plans should comprise educating the patient about this rare complication before commencing medication, close follow-up with serial electrolyte monitoring, and discontinuing medications in the state of infection, dehydration and recent surgery and serious illness requiring hospitalization.

Biological control using rhizosphere bacteria, Pseudomonas spp. and Serratia spp. is a prospective alternative technique to overcome plant parasitic nematodes infection. So, the current study was conducted in vitro on five egg-masses, 100 free eggs and 100 infective juveniles (IJs) of Meloidogyne incognita as well as greenhouse treatments on Luffa aegyptiaca L. to evaluate the nematicidal potential of six strains belong to Pseudomonas spp. and Serratia spp. as compared to oxamyl. Results showed that the inhibitory effect and juvenile mortality varied according to bacteria species, strains and exposure time. All the tested bacteria significantly (P ≤ 0.05) inhibited egg hatching and increased juvenile mortality in vitro. After 3 days of treatment, Pseudomonas spp. were more effective against eggs (48.31to 55.15%) and IJs (20.98 to 25.30%) than Serratia spp. (44.55 to 49.75% with eggs) and (19.06 to 21.61% with IJs), respectively. In the pot experiment, Luffa aegyptiaca L. treated with Serratia spp. and Pseudomonas spp. displayed significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) levels of growth (as indicated by root length, fresh roots weight and fresh shoots weight) compared to control plants and significantly (P ≤ 0.05) suppressed galling (number of galls) and reproduction (as indicated by number of egg-masses on roots and number of eggs and juveniles in pot soil). Meanwhile, among the treated plants, Serratia spp. and Pseudomonas spp. gave the best results in shoot weight of pots infected by eggs of M. incognita than those infected with IJs as compared with positive control. While, oxamyl treatment gave the best results in pots infected by eggs and IJs. The lowest galling (gall index), number of eggs and juveniles in soil was observed in the treatment with mixture of Serratia spp. and Pseudomonas spp. as well as, enhanced growth of sponge gourd more than application each of them alone. Pots treated with oxamyl overwhelmed those treated with mixture of Serratia spp. and Pseudomonas spp.

BACKGROUND: The Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) represented a great risk to public health. In this study, 60 STEC strains recovered from broiler and duck fecal samples, cow's milk, cattle beef, human urine, and ear discharge were screened for 12 virulence genes, phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance, and multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA). RESULTS: The majority of strains harbored Shiga toxin 1 (stx1) and stx1d, stx2 and stx2e, and ehxA genes, while a minority harbored stx2c subtype and eaeA. We identified 10 stx gene combinations; most of strains 31/60 (51.7%) exhibited four copies of stx genes, namely the stx1, stx1d, stx2, and stx2e, and the strains exhibited a high range of multiple antimicrobial resistance indices. The resistance genes blaCTX-M-1 and blaTEM were detected. For the oxytetracycline resistance genes, most of strains contained tetA, tetB, tetE, and tetG while the tetC was present at low frequency. MLVA genotyping resolved 26 unique genotypes; genotype 21 was highly prevalent. The six highly discriminatory loci DI = 0.9138 are suitable for the preliminary genotyping of STEC from animals and humans. CONCLUSIONS: The STEC isolated from animals are virulent, resistant to antimicrobials, and genetically diverse, thus demands greater attention for the potential risk to human.

Theileriosis is a significant hemoprotozoal disease of domestic and wild ruminants in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Ovines are mainly infected by T. ovis and T. lestoquardi, causing economic losses. Due to data scarceness in the Sulaymaniyah governorate, north of Iraq, this study was conducted to investigate subclinical theileriosis using microscopic examination and PCR. A total of 450 blood samples were collected from eight districts in Sulaymaniyah. The samples were randomly taken from clinically healthy sheep in 40 farms from April to Octo- ber 2017. Following the organism verification, PCR products were sequenced and aligned. The study results revealed that 76.0% (n=342) and 58.0% (n=261) of the examined samples were positive for Theileria spp. by PCR and microscopic examination. T. ovis was reported in 76.0% (n=342) of all tested samples, while T. lestoquardi was present in 28.4% (n=97) of the positive specimens. Higher infection rates were observed during July and August. Analysis of the 18S rRNA gene partial sequence of the studied isolates with corresponding sequences in GenBank showed high degrees of identities with T. ovis and T. lestoquardi isolates reported from Iraq and other countries. T. uilenbergi and T. sp. OT3 were detected only through analysis of obtained partial sequences from Theileria-positive samples. Following analysis, T. uilenbergi isolates represented a high homology degree with Theileria isolates from Iraq and China. The newly identified T. sp. OT3 showed >99% identity with T. sp. OT3 isolates of Chinese and Spanish origin.

In this study, the seasonal dynamics of the flavonoids in the cones and leaves of oriental Thuja (Platycladus orientalis L. Franco) as well as the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of their extracts were investigated. The important chemical markers of the studied extracts were determined using untargeted HPTLC profiling, which was further utilized to assess the seasonality effect on the composition of these metabolites over three seasonal cycles. A quantitative HPTLC method was developed and validated for the identified chemical markers of oriental Thuja: hyperoside, quercetrin, isoscutellarein-7-O-ß-xyloside, cupressuflavone, hinokiflavone, sotetsuflavone and isoscutellarein-8-methyl ether. The highest amounts of flavonoids were observed during the summer and winter seasons, where the leaves possessed higher contents of flavonoids compared to cones. Flavone glycosides are a major class of flavones encountered in leaves, while the cones mainly accumulated biflavones. The results showed that the effect of seasonal variation on the accumulation of flavonoids within the cones was less pronounced than in the leaves. The summer leaves showed a remarkable reduction in the levels of INF-γ, where the value decreased to 80.7 ± 1.25 pg mL-1, a significantly lower level than that obtained with piroxicam (180 ± 1.47 pg mL-1); this suggests a noteworthy anti-inflammatory potential. OPLS (orthogonal projection to latent structures) models showed that flavonoidal glycosides, quercetrin, hyperoside and isoscutellarein-7-O-ß-xyloside were the most contributing biomarkers to the reduction in pro-inflammatory mediators in LPS-stimulated WBCs. The results obtained in the study can thus be exploited to establish the best organs as well as the optimal periods of the year for collecting and obtaining certain biomarkers at high concentrations to guarantee the efficacy of the obtained extracts.

Heavy metals have a wide application in the industrial world, affecting the health and longevity of living organisms. The current study assessed the possible effects of Cadmium (Cd) and Zinc (Zn) on the liver and kidney. Therefore, 150 male and female white mice C57BL were treated in three different groups with 0.685 mg/L CdCl2. 2.5H2O (group 1), and 0.567 mg/L ZnSO4.7H2O (group 2) in drinking water, while the control group only received water for 90 days to investigate how these elements accumulated in the liver/kidney and evaluate the possible histological changes in the liver and kidney. During 90 days, the histopathological consequences of Cd and Zn on the liver and kidneys were recorded. The results pointed out that exposure to heavy metals, such as Cd and Zn, led to organ accumulation of these elements. The histological evaluations demonstrated significant detrimental effects on the liver and kidney. Under the influence of Cd, light microscopic examination revealed significant histological alterations in both organs. In the animals exposed to Cd and Zn, histopathological alterations were observed in the liver, including extensive degeneration, necrosis, depletion, and necrosis of hepatocytes with significant nuclear hypertrophy. When animals are exposed to Cd and Zn, histological alterations in the kidneys include severe vascular degeneration and renal tubule necrosis. In conclusion, heavy metal intoxication has been shown to cause histopathological changes in the liver and kidneys of experimental animal models.

OBJECTIVES: Leishmania major (L. major) is a cutaneous leishmaniasis causative agent. Current chemotherapeutic methods are not totally effective in treatment of this disease. The immunomodulation and tissue repairing capability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), ease of isolation, detection and in vitro culture, have encouraged biologists to use MSCs for cell therapy in different infections such as cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS: BALB/c mice (6-8 weeks old) were infected with L. major then divided into four groups and treated with MSCs, Glucantime, Glucantime + MSCs, or PBS. Regression of lesions, potency of macrophages for phagocytosis, proliferation of immune cells against Leishmania soluble antigen, reduction of spleen parasite burden and healing of the lesions were evaluated on days 10, 20 and 30 of treatment. RESULTS: The results indicated that the mice intralesionally injected with MSCs showed significant regression in the lesions produced by L. major by day 30. Proliferation of splenocytes stimulated with SLA (soluble leishmania antigen) in vitro in MSC-treated mice on day 20 was significantly higher than in the other groups. The potency of phagocytosis in macrophages of mice treated with MSCs was significantly higher by day 30 and healing of the lesions in this group of mice showed more progress on histopathological examinations. Spleen parasite burden showed significant reduction in the mice treated with Glucantime + MSCs by day 30. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that including MSCs in treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. major is a promising approach.

OBJECTIVE: MicroRNAs act locally and systemically to impact osteoarthritis (OA) pathophysiology, but comprehensive profiling of the circulating miRNome in early vs late stages of OA has yet to be conducted. Sequencing has emerged as the preferred method for microRNA profiling since it offers high sensitivity and specificity. Our objective was to sequence the miRNome in plasma from 91 patients with early [Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade 0 or 1 (n = 41)] or late [KL grade 3 or 4 (n = 50)] symptomatic radiographic knee OA to identify unique microRNA signatures in each disease state. DESIGN: MicroRNA libraries were prepared using the QIAseq miRNA Library Kit and sequenced on the Illumina NextSeq 550. Counts were produced for microRNAs captured in miRBase and for novel microRNAs. Statistical, bioinformatics, and computational biology approaches were used to refine and interpret the final list of microRNAs. RESULTS: From 215 differentially expressed microRNAs (FDR < 0.01), 97 microRNAs showed an increase or decrease in expression in ≥85% of samples in the early OA group as compared to the median expression in the late OA group. Increasing this threshold to ≥95%, seven microRNAs were identified: hsa-miR-335-3p, hsa-miR-199a-5p, hsa-miR-671-3p, hsa-miR-1260b, hsa-miR-191-3p, hsa-miR-335-5p, and hsa-miR-543. Four novel microRNAs were present in ≥50% of early OA samples and had 27 predicted gene targets in common with the prioritized set of predicted gene targets from the 97 microRNAs, suggesting common underlying mechanisms. CONCLUSION: Sequencing of well-characterized patient cohorts produced unbiased profiling of the circulating miRNome and identified a unique panel of 11 microRNAs in early radiographic knee OA.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Juniperus plants are considered important sources of cedar-wood oil which is used widely in folk medicine as antiseptic and in treatment of inflammatory disorders such as, rheumatoid arthritis but there is not enough scientific evidence to support the claimed uses and there is no specification of a certain Juniperus species as the most active. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is volatiles profiling of three Juniperus species; J. communis, J. horizontalis and J. chinensis in addition to efficacy-directed discrimination of the three studied essential oils based on their antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities in LPS (lipopolysaccharide)-stimulated WBCs (White blood cells) to investigate the inter-specific variability effect on the biological activities of each oil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Volatile components profiling of the three studied plants volatile oils was achieved using GC-FID (Gas chromatography - flame ionization detector) and GC-MS (Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry). The antimicrobial activity of the studied essential oils was investigated and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined for oils. The production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines was evaluated by ELISA (Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). Identification of the biomarkers responsible for each activity was attempted through construction of orthogonal projection to latent structures model using multivariate statistical analysis. RESULTS: Forty five components were identified in the volatile oils of the three studied plants. J. horizontalis oil displayed the highest activity against E. coli while J. communis showed the highest activity against S. aureus. OPLS model biplot showed the in-between class discrimination of J. chinensis oil sample from J. communis and J. horizontalis. The three oils were found to significantly decrease the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor (TNF)- α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, and gamma interferon (INF- γ) in lipopolysaccharide-activated white blood cells. All studied oils were similar in reduction of TNF-α, and INF-γ, while J. chinensis oil possessed the highest potency against IL-1ß. The coefficient plots of TNF-α and INF-γ pro-inflammatory mediators showed that 1-terpineol, 4-terpineol, bornyl acetate, dl-limonene and α-pinene positive contributors to both activities while ß-thujone, 3-carene and γ-muurolene were the positive contributors to IL-1ß inhibitory activity. CONCLUSION: The differences observed in the volatile profiles among the three studied oils demonstrate the effect of inter-specific variability on the biological activities of the tested oils. It was shown that the tested oils possessed good antibacterial activities against E.coli and S. aureus justifying its folk use as an a topical antiseptic while the observed anti-inflammatory effects in human WBCs is due at least in part to their inhibitory effect on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

A conventional reactor in microbial electrochemical technology (MET) consists of anode and cathode compartments divided by a separator, which is usually a proton exchange membrane (PEM), such as Nafion 117. In this study, a novel porous clay earthenware (NCE) was fabricated as the separator to replace the highly cost PEM. The fabrication of NCEs is with raw clay powder and starch powder that acts as a pore-forming agent at different starch powder contents (10 vol%, 20 vol%, and 30 vol%), ball-milled before hydraulically pressed to form green ceramic pellets and sintered up to 1200 °C. The highest power density of 2250 ± 21 mW/m2 (6.0 A/m2), the internal resistance of 75 ± 24 Ω and coulombic efficiency (CE) of 44 ± 21% were produced for MFC-NCE from 30 vol% starch powder content under batch mode operation. The MFC-PEM combination produced the lowest power density, CE and the highest internal resistance up to 1350 ± 17 mW/m2 (3.0 A/m2), 23 ± 15% and 326 ± 13 Ω, respectively.

Background: The STEPS programme has been succesfully implemented as a group-based treatment of trauma symptoms after rape for adolescents. The STEPS intervention was translated from Dutch to Danish and offered to adults in addition to adolescents as well as an individual intervention in addition to a group-based intervention at a Danish Centre for Rape Victims through 2011 to 2014. Objective: The present study observes  development in trauma symptoms and ICD-11 diagnostic status during an adapted version of the intervention programme 'STEPS' for survivors of sexual assault. Methods: A prospective uncontrolled study was conducted, monitoring symptoms of posttraumatic stress and other trauma-related symptomatology before treatment, after treatment and at 6 and 12 months' follow up for 103 referrals receiving individual or group-based STEPS. Tentative diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD were assigned to participants according to the ICD-11 to observe the development in diagnostic status across time, and multilevel modelling was used to assess the development of symptom severity and to assess the moderating effect of age-group and mode of delivery. Results: A loglinear function representing large and statistically significant decline in symptomatology over time provided the best fit for all measures of trauma-related symptomatology. The decline was not moderated by age-group or mode of intervention. Dropout rates were independent of mode of intervention and age. Conclusion: The adaption of the STEPS programme to adults and as an individual intervention is feasible and maintains effect sizes comparable to those observed in the original intervention. Further research using randomized controlled trials is needed to ascribe the observed effect to the STEPS programme.


Antecedentes: El programa STEPS se ha implementado con éxito como un tratamiento grupal de síntomas de trauma después de una violación en adolescentes. La intervención STEPS se tradujo del holandés al danés y se ofreció a adultos además de adolescentes, así como una intervención individual además de una intervención grupal en un Centro danés para víctimas de violación hasta el 2011 y el 2014.Objetivo: El presente estudio observa el desarrollo de síntomas de trauma y el estado de diagnóstico de la CIE-11 durante una versión adaptada del programa de intervención "PASOS" para los sobrevivientes de agresión sexual.Métodos: Se realizó un estudio prospectivo no controlado, monitorizando los síntomas de estrés postraumático y otras sintomatologías relacionadas con trauma antes del tratamiento, después del tratamiento y a los 6 y 12 meses de seguimiento para 103 derivaciones. Se asignaron a los participantes los diagnósticos tentativos de trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT) y TEPT complejo según la CIE-11 para observar el desarrollo en el estado de diagnóstico a través del tiempo, y se usó un modelado multinivel para evaluar el desarrollo de la severidad de los síntomas y evaluar el efecto moderador del grupo de edad y modo de entrega.Resultados: Un función lineal logarítmica que representa una disminución grande y estadísticamente significativa de la sintomatología a lo largo del tiempo proporcionó el mejor ajuste para todas las medidas de la sintomatología relacionada con trauma. El efecto no fue moderado por grupo de edad o tipo de intervención. Las tasas de abandono fueron independientes del tipo de intervención y edad.Conclusión:: La adaptación del programa STEPS para adultos y como una intervención individual es factible y mantiene el tamaño del efecto comparable con aquellos observados en la intervención original. Se necesita más investigación usando estudios controlados aleatorizados para atribuir el efecto observado al programa STEPS.
